Visiting the vineyards of Madeira is an opportunity to practice integrated regenerative tourism, understood as a set of holistic practices that promote environmental, economic, and social well-being, as well as the cohesion of local communities. This new way of enjoying the destination values not only the visitor's experience but also the balance between people and nature, guests and hosts in the visited territories.
In the small family vineyards of Madeira, where heroic viticulture shapes the steep slopes of the island, your support helps preserve traditional techniques and unique grape varieties, as well as the landscape itself, while strengthening the local economy and promoting the conservation of natural resources. By choosing these visits, you contribute to a virtuous cycle that integrates the protection of cultural heritage, respect for nature, and the harmonious development of communities. This regenerative approach recognizes the importance of integrating multiple factors — from soil health and biodiversity to valuing local knowledge and people’s well-being — creating a positive impact that goes far beyond sustainable tourism, which only seeks to mitigate the negative impact of the sector. Thus, your journey becomes a conscious and responsible act that helps ensure the continuity and vitality of Madeira wine traditions, because without winegrowers, there is no wine.
The pilot project HeVITOUR MAD explores this new way of discovering the destination, as part of the safeguarding plan for the Traditions of Madeira Wine as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Started in July 2025, this project, developed by a consortium of three research centers (CITUR, ISOPLEXIS, CQM) at the University of Madeira, already involves several small winegrowers eager to showcase their vineyards and share the fruits of their labor.
