Pinto Figueira Vineyard

“… a centuries-old winery where the rhythms of the grape harvest still echo, while Lino continues to stomp the grapes with his feet, just as his ancestors did …”

Living the Tradition: The Experience

Discover the soul of Madeira wine with Lino Pinto, a dedicated winegrower and winemaker, at the Pinto Figueira vineyard — a centuries-old family estate nestled on the historic slopes of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Surrounded by terraces supported by stone walls and ancient vine arbors, this intimate visit offers an authentic insight into the heroic spirit of viticulture on the island.

At the heart of the estate stands a well-preserved traditional Madeiran house, perpetuating the knowledge and hospitality of several generations. Nearby is a centuries-old winery where the rhythms of the grape harvest still echo. Lino continues to stomp the grapes with his feet, just as his ancestors did, carefully crafting his own wines with character — focusing mainly on the iconic traditional grape variety, Tinta Negra.

Access to the estate is via a traditional Madeiran cobblestone path, which leads you through a landscape that is both cultivated and wild. The family practices polyculture among the vine arbors, growing sweet potatoes, peas, broad beans, and various fruit trees for their own use. Even the goats play an important role, providing natural fertiliser that enriches the volcanic soil. No herbicides are used, as selective clearing and ecological care ensure the vineyard thrives sustainably.

This is more than just a vineyard visit — it’s a cultural journey that contributes to the regeneration of Madeira’s winemaking heritage.
