Madeira Wine Traditions Application to the UNESCO ICH List: Promoting Community Participation<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n By Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 Marques da Silva<\/strong> This communication analyses the fundamental role of community participation<\/strong> in applications to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) List<\/strong>, using the Madeira wine traditions<\/strong> as a case study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Active community participation<\/strong> is central to the nomination of the Madeira Wine Traditions. This includes informed consent<\/strong>, oral testimonies<\/strong>, and collaboration in the preparation of the nomination dossier<\/strong>. A total of 72 audio interviews<\/strong> were conducted with members of the Madeira wine community. In parallel, public events and media outreach activities were organised to raise public awareness<\/strong> and promote community engagement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This case demonstrates how a community-centred approach<\/strong> can contribute to the safeguarding of living heritage<\/strong>, while also empowering those who keep it alive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Invited communication<\/strong> at the UNESCO ICH Evaluation Conference and International Stockfish Heritage Meeting<\/strong>, in Finnmark<\/strong>, from 12 to 16 June 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Evaluation Conference<\/strong> and the International Stockfish Heritage Meeting<\/strong> will take place from 12 to 16 June 2025<\/strong>, in the breathtaking Nordkyn Peninsula<\/strong>, in Finnmark, Norway<\/strong>. Organised by Bivdu.no<\/a><\/strong>, in partnership with Visit Nordkyn<\/a><\/strong>, this gathering brings together experts, cultural organisations, chefs, academics, policymakers, and traditional producers from around the world to explore and celebrate the cultural value of stockfish traditions<\/strong> within the broader framework of UNESCO-recognised intangible heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Held in Mehamn<\/strong>, the event combines conference sessions<\/strong>, cultural exchanges<\/strong>, and field visits<\/strong>. Key topics include the UNESCO nomination process<\/strong>, sustainable resource management<\/strong>, S\u00e1mi cultural perspectives<\/strong>, and international collaborations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The conference will also highlight examples of community-driven nominations<\/strong>, such as the case of the Madeira wine traditions<\/strong> and the German stockfish initiative<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under the mediation of renowned academic Prof. Carl W.
